The challenge

Compact photonic sensing requires the photonic sensor, light source, detector, microfluidics and electronics to operate as one manufacturable platform while maintaining sensitivity, low power consumption and small form factor.

How the project works

COMPAS develops a photonic integrated-circuit sensing platform that co-integrates light sources, photodetectors, microfluidics and analogue electronics using a chiplet approach for air and water monitoring.

Our contribution

Oliveris leads WP4 Modular Electronics, developing the electronics that turn the photonic sensing chiplets into complete sensor units. The team defines the electrical interfaces, develops the analogue sensor-measurement electronics and connections between the different parts of the platform, and builds test structures on FR4 and Kapton to prove the interconnect approach. Oliveris also develops printed and additive-electronics concepts, including TFT gate arrays. The work then brings the photonic chiplets, electronics and microfluidics together into integrated photonic sensor platform (PSP) units for testing and validation, with manufacture and scale-up in mind.
